Every industry has a shorthand for communicating information in as short and succinct manner as possible. There is after all those codes on the sidewall of a tire that communicates, to those that know the code, a lot of information. Far more than most of us not in the know can imagine. The upholstery industry is no exception. And a lot of that information is on those annoying tags that festoon new furniture. Mr Madison Carpet Cleaning outline the cleaning codes go as follows.
Cleaning Codes on Couches, Sofas & Upholstered Furniture
W – Code W stands for a water based cleaner and are among the easiest fabrics to clean up. This does not mean machine washable, however. It does mean that you can spot clean with a water based cleaner. Do not over wet the stain, you can use a brush or the upholstery attachment on carpet cleaners.
S – the S code stands for solvents and indicates dry cleaning. You can spot treat stains with a non-water based solvent or dry-cleaning chemicals. Good ventilation is mandatory as these products produce a lot of fumes and keep away from open flames, most are highly volatile (meaning they evaporate rapidly) moving from liquid to vapor, and the vapor are what constitute any fire hazard. Avoid anything with carbon tetrachloride, it is a potent toxin.
W/S – the ‘combo’ can use cleaners based on water or solvents. The fabrics can be spot cleaned with upholstery shampoos. Also foam from mild detergent or a mild dry-cleaning solvent.
X – Vacuum clean only or by lightly brushing the fabric. “X” marked fabric cannot tolerate water or solvent based cleaners.
How to Clean Upholstery Fabric
So, between the occasional professional cleaning what is the best practice for upholstery maintenance?
Vacuum Sofa – the vacuum with the upholstery attachment is the primary cleaning method for all fabrics. It can get rid of most of the surface dirt and grim. A good vacuum can even penetrate the deep fibers to remove dirt. Use your vac on the cushions.
Rotate Couch Cushions – flipping you cushions evens out wear and reduces the accumulation of dirt.
Clean Spills Immediately – Blot them clean, using an absorbent cloth. If staining remains you can refer to the cleaning code and use the appropriate clean agent, water or solvent base, depending on the cleaning code. Have pets and kids, you’re going to be dealing with stained upholstery and carpets. For W marked fabrics the water extraction method (steam cleaning) uses hot water the penetrates deep, attacks lingering stains and makes the upholstery look new. And W cleaning code is the most common.
Spot Test Cleaning – If the tag is missing test on a hidden spot to ensure your cleaning agent is non-damaging to the fabric.
